Last Saturday, metres from the shiny Shoreditch High Street Overground station, another Street Scenes welcomed all and everyone to mingle for the sake of public life.

Last Saturday, metres from shiny Shoreditch station, another Street Scenes welcomed all and everyone to mingle for the sake of public life.

Light entertainments kept the throng amused for hours. Here are the highlights.

Thousands upon thousands of Lego pieces, scattered on a large table, set up to welcome passers-by.

A boyhood’s favourite fiddling figures, shared for the Saturday night crowd. Overgrown kids all over.

A happy hair-dresser, waiting for pedestrians with hair to be halved. Carrying a little plastic stall, red cloth and cutting tools, she gave anyone a trim, happy as you like.

Over the way, three eccentric ladies offered a blind, food-tasting adventure.

First, a thick scarf placed to shield the eyes from the surprise.

Then, a grape, followed by a spoon of chocolate sludge, chased by pickled onion, before a small square of cheese, custard tart, gherkins, more, mixed, by the mouthful.

“It’s the feeling of a dazzling Jackson Pollock in the mouth”, gobbled one grinning recipient.

Elsewhere, that ir/regular face-stylist Artie was on hand with his paints. This time he sought to find the inner spirit and auras of visitors.

Once he’d found it, he delivered a delicate transfer to lift the recipient’s look. Some found him and his designs a little too honest on the night, but most were moved by his touch.

Hundreds of people passed through this very busy Street Scenes. Were you one? Did you experience anything unusual or remarkable that night? Please send in your reports, photos, quotes and conundrums.

Street Scenes goes from strength to strength. We are looking for more friendly entertainers to make the street an inviting place at our get-togethers. The street loves it, the people love it, and so will you. Give us a hoot if you’ll join us in the coming months.

This was a first Street Scenes date for Bethnal Green, and there was ample space for our little bunch of oddities.

This was the first Street Scenes date for Bethnal Green where there was ample space for our little bunch of oddities.

On the street we pitched: face painter on one side, the letter writing spot under a tree, patch workshop two metres up and a selection of illustrated nursery rhymes dangling from branches to be had by anyone wanting one.

It was small but sweet enough to attract a variety of passers-by to enquire and enlist.

One man sat at the letter-writing spot and crafted an extraordinary letter to his old friend Sam.

The page, tilted to landscape orientation, was energetically carved into varying sections, each with a different tone.

In one, he wrote like a man making heart-felt gestures to a long-lost, in another he wrote like a maddened cynic who’d been had by a cult of street urchins.

Arrows, illustrations and notes related the various sections as a tapestry of attitudes exploded from the page.

We were struck and delighted by the man’s remarkable technique, pledging thereby to include more arrows, lines and loops in future messaging of our own.

Others also took the opportunity to write to neglected relatives and old friends. I report gladly that we opened a portal of tender, inky communication.

The patch workshop was a marvel of adorable fabrics, pockets waiting for hosts, and a pin cushion bursting to thread them all to new people. The needle-mistress summoned folk over to have their garments remade.

Elbows were reinforced, lapels recoloured and streaks of colour appeared everywhere on the night. Patches make people very chuffed indeed.

All the while, Artie busied away with his ‘visage emulsions’, displaying the full range of his face colouring talents.

Perhaps most charming was a little red teapot which sat poised to receive tears just under Tim’s right eye.

Forward thinking face-painting. Expect to see Artie colouring more than just faces at coming events.

This was a lively and enjoyable Street Scenes. New scenes were tried out and the repertoire grows for our future interactions. Let’s have you for the next!

Every minute, in the region of 18 million opportunities are missed by strangers to transform other strangers into friends. The sites of this perpetual loss, are the long and winding corridors of fortune that we know as our city’s streets.

Just occasionally, fate decides that the people will meet, that minds will align, and friendship is born. But mostly, people walk by and dismiss their world companions.

Street Scenes are made to turn those missed opportunities into living moments.

As summer faded we gathered our curiosities and talents on London Fields for a spot of public friend-making.

As summer faded we gathered our curiosities on London Fields for a spot of public merry-making.

We started with self-help portraits, massage, haircuts, pom-pom pet creation, an art gallery with free works for all, and more.

Before long, passers-by got involved to offer their own additions to the scene.

Two young boys were inspired to run home and fetch their own kit. They returned to bound about our little stretch of street, scrawling vivid caricatures of anyone wanting a novel, nippers’ depiction of themselves.

We met many people who were happy to meet us out there, to mingle and bring their own weird, wonderful thoughts and items to our public jaunt. That is why we will make more street scenes from now on.
